Mount Carmel Health System

Charles E. Sanders, Jr., MD, FACP is Vice President, Medical Education and Research, at Mount Carmel Health System (MCHS). Dr. Sanders directs and oversees the Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, Office of Research Affairs, GME Ambulatory Clinics, Continuing Medical Education and the Center for Innovative Learning for the System.

Prior to coming to MCHS in October 2011, Dr. Sanders received his bachelor’s degree from the Purdue University College of Pharmacy, his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, completed an Internal Medicine residency at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital (BMH), and a fellowship in Rheumatology/Immunology at the University of Cincinnati. He has held the positions of Vice President of Medical Education and Research at IU Health BMH in Muncie, Indiana, Vice President of Research and Chief Academic Officer at The Carle Foundation in Urbana, Illinois, Medical Director of the Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases section of the research division at DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware and was Director and co-founder of the Department of Research at IU Health BMH. He was also in private practice as a Rheumatologist before moving into his roles of Vice President. He also currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Medical Education for Affiliated Programs for The Ohio State University School of Medicine at MCHS and serves on their Executive Curriculum Committee and the College's Courage To Teach Board of Directors. He serves on the Academic Affairs Committee of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing and their Board of Trustees. He has held prior clinical faculty positions with the Indiana University School of Medicine, Muncie Campus, and the University of Illinois School of Medicine, Urbana-Champaign Campus.

Dr. Sanders has held several leadership positions at his previous institutions and currently at Mount Carmel and within the Trinity Health parent organization. He currently serves on the Minority Advocacy Council of his alma mater the Purdue University College of Pharmacy and previously the African American Leadership Academy of Columbus. He recently received the 2014 CHE Trinity Father Basil Anthony Moreau Executive Diversity and Inclusion Champion of the Year Award and several other diversity awards.

Dr. Sanders’ professional memberships include the Association for Hospital Medical Education, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American College of Rheumatology. He is a fellow member of both colleges. He is active in his church, currently lives in Dublin, Ohio and is an avid Purdue sports fan and enjoys hiking, biking, and outdoor activities.
