Liz Piatt, Ph.D. is currently Assistant Professor and Chair of Sociology at Hiram College. She also holds a faculty appointment in Family and Community Medicine at the Northeast Ohio Medical University. Prior to her current appointments, she was a Minority Fellow in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Pre-doctoral Training Program, co-sponsored by the American Sociological Association, and received a NIMH Dissertation Grant to Increase Diversity.
Dr. Piatt’s research interests are primarily in the area of race disparities in physical and mental health. Her current projects focus on the impact of social roles on mental health and the use of narrative medicine as a strategy for addressing race disparities in health. She is also a REEP evaluator for the State of Ohio Commission on Minority Health and has assessed the effectiveness of a number of Commission-funded health programs. Dr. Piatt’s work has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and the Ohio Public Health Association.
Dr. Piatt received her doctorate in Medical Sociology from Kent State University; her Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Akron; and her Bachelor’s in Pan-African Studies from Kent State University. She lives in Northeast Ohio, where you can often find her running, walking or hiking in one of the parks.
